They say that Thursday is the new Friday, so why not kick-start the weekend with some soulful sounds courtesy of jazz singer ZENA JAMES who brings her catchy grooves and infectious energy to the Bull’s Head in Barnes next Thursday night (September 28).
Drawing inspiration from the jazz greats and 1970s soul, Zena has delighted audiences for more than 15 years with her mix of original tracks along with jazz and pop re-inventions.
She is a familiar face to London’s live music fans having performed at the likes of Twickenham Jazz Club, The Boaters Inn in Kingston, the Crown in St Margarets and the Bingham Hotel.
Now, the Twickenham-based songstress returns to the Bull’s Head, a place she knows only too well and she can’t wait to get started.
“I love singing on home ground,” she said.
“The jazz room at the Bull’s Head has been our local haunt for many years, both for performing and watching friends perform.
“It’s provides an intimate atmosphere and is a perfect place for launching – often as an acoustic trio – our groovy jazz re-workings of 1970s and 80s pop and soul tunes.
“We perform music by the likes of Smokey Robinson, Annie Lennox, Terence Trent D’Arby and Alison Moyet.
“All Cried Out, which we’ve done a stripped back haunting jazz arrangement of, is one of my all-time faves to sing.”
Zena will be accompanied on Thursday by two musicians who cross over perfectly between jazz, pop and soul.
Pianist Rob Taggart worked on all the arrangements for Zena’s Captivated album, and co-wrote the album’s title song, as well as the track You Move Me, while long-time collaborator Andy Hamill will be on double bass.
Zena has garnered some great reviews for her music and currently has two albums out on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify entitled Captivated and Tell Me More.
