On Friday, 22nd November, the UK’s optical industry gathered at the iconic Grosvenor Hotel in Mayfair for the highly anticipated Optician Awards. This annual event celebrates excellence in the field of optics, recognising the standout achievements of 2024. Among the nominees, Twickenham’s The Optical Gallery shone brightly, earning nominations in two major categories: Fashion Practice of the Year and Best Independent Practice.

For the second year running, the family-run business led by brothers Nicos, Marios, and Antonios found themselves in the spotlight. The trio, who have been at the helm for the past decade, were ecstatic to win the prestigious Fashion Practice of the Year award. While narrowly missing out on the title of Best Independent Practice, their pride and joy were undeniable as they celebrated this monumental achievement.

We spoke to Nicos, the eldest of the three brothers, to discover what sets The Optical Gallery apart from its competitors.

What do you think makes The Optical Gallery stand out from other opticians across the UK?

“Our passion, without a doubt,” said Nicos. “Optics is such a unique industry—it sits at the crossroads of the medical and the fashionable. Striking that balance and providing the best advice while sourcing unique, niche eyewear and lenses is what we pride ourselves on. Our eyewear styling consultations are all about blending expertise with a personalised, enjoyable experience, and that’s what makes us different.”

Some would describe your approach as unconventional. How do you see it?

“Absolutely, and we’re proud of that! It’s intentional and authentic to who we are. Many professionals might dial down their personality to fit the role, but we prefer to keep things fresh, edgy, and above all, fun. Let’s face it—optics as a topic can be quite dry, and we’re determined to change that perception.

We have clients travelling from across the UK and even from overseas to be styled and tested at The Optical Gallery. Our eyewear exhibitions draw significant attention, our social media stands out, and our store itself is designed as an art gallery. Add to this our world-class frame collections and innovative lens solutions, and you’ve got the essence of The Optical Gallery. It’s all about combining creativity with unparalleled expertise.”

Nicos smiled. “We’re absolutely thrilled to bring the trophy for Fashion Practice of the Year 2024 back home to London. It’s an incredible feeling to be recognised, but what makes this win truly special is celebrating it as part of a fantastic team.
